Exterior angle 3x, inside angles 50 and 70

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Exterior angle of a triangle · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: if the exterior angle is 3x° and the far inside angles are 50° and 70°, what is x?

outside 3x°, inside 50° and 70°

The exterior angle is outside the triangle, on the pushed-out side.

1 Use the rule

outside angle = the two far inside angles

The exterior angle is the two far inside angles added together.

So 50 + 70 = 3x.

= 50 + 70 = 3x

Careful!

The outside angle is not inside the triangle.

It does not go in the 180° sum.

Careful: not 50 + 70 + 3x = 180 ✗

2 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

Plain numbers go together.

50 + 70 = 120.

50 + 70 = 120

Now we have 120 = 3x.

120 = 3x

Let's swap the two sides, so x is on the left.

3x = 120

3 Remove the 3

3x means 3 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 3, we divide by 3.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

3x3 = 1203

3 divided by 3 is 1.

So just x is left.

120 divided by 3 is 40.

1203 = 40

So x = 40!

x = 40

4 Check

Let's check: with x = 40, the inside angles are 50° and 70°.

Together 120°, the outside angle.

So the answer is right!

inside 50° and 70°: 50 + 70 = 120 = outside 120°

Let's look back.

First: use the rule.

Then: group like terms.

Then: remove the 3.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 40

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

outside 3x°, inside 30° and 30°
Show the answer
x = 20
