Factor 5a^3 - 40

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Sum and difference of cubes · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: factor 5a³ − 40.

5a3 − 40

1 Common factor first

Always look for a common factor first.

5 and 40 can both be divided by 5.

5, 40: all in the 5 times table

So it is 5(a³ − 8).

= 5(a3 − 8)

2 Write as cubes

Cubes are a number times itself three times: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8, 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.

a³ is a cubed.

8 is 2 cubed.

cubes: 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000
a3 = (a)3, 8 = 2³

So it is a difference of two cubes: a is a and b is 2.

= 5((a)3 − 23)

3 Use the pattern

Here is the pattern.

The first bracket has the same sign as the question.

In the second bracket the middle sign is the opposite one, and the last sign is always plus.

a³ − b³ = (a − b)(a² + ab + b²)
first bracket: same sign (−); middle: opposite (+); last: +

We put a = a and b = 2 into the pattern.

= 5[(a − 2)(a2 + a × 2 + 22)]

Careful!

It is not (a − 2)³.

Multiplied out, that has a² and a terms too.

Careful: not (a − 2)³ ✗

4 Tidy up

a squared is a².

a times 2 is 2a.

2 squared is 4.

(a)² = a², a × 2 = 2a, 2² = 4

So we get 5(a − 2)(a² + 2a + 4).

= 5(a − 2)(a2 + 2a + 4)

The second bracket can't be factored: with this pattern it never can.

5 Check

Let's check: we multiply it back out.

Each part of one bracket times each part of the other.

Check: (a − 2)(a2 + 2a + 4)
= a3 + 2a2 + 4a − 2a2 − 4a − 8 = a3 − 8

Then the common factor times every part.

5(a3 − 8) = 5a3 − 40

We get 5a³ − 40 again.

So it is right!

Let's look back.

First: common factor first.

Then: write as cubes.

Then: use the pattern.

Then: tidy up.

Last: check.

Answer
= 5(a − 2)(a2 + 2a + 4)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Factor 5a3 − 135
Show the answer
5(a − 3)(a2 + 3a + 9)
