Step by step

The question

Question: make a frequency table of 1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 4 and 2.

1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 4, 2

The frequency of a number is how many times it comes.

frequency f = how many times

1 List the values

We write each value once, smallest first: 1, 2, 3 and 4.

2 Tally

Careful!

Cross out each number as you count it.

Then none is missed, and none is counted twice.

Careful: cross out each number as you count it

The first number is 1.

We cross it out, and put one mark next to 1.

Next is 2: one mark next to 2.

And so on: one mark for each number.

Every number is crossed out.

So every number has its mark.

3 Count

1 has 2 marks: f = 2.

2 has 4 marks: f = 4.

3 has 1 mark: f = 1.

4 has 1 mark: f = 1.

4 Check

Let's check.

We add the f column: 2 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8.

There are 8 numbers in the list.

Every one is counted.

So it is right!

2 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 8 numbers

Let's look back.

First: list the values.

Then: tally.

Then: count.

Last: check.
