Step by step

The question

Question: find the mean of this frequency table.

The values x are 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Their frequencies f are 4, 3, 2 and 1.

Mean of the frequency table

x is the value.

f is how many times it comes.

So 1 comes 4 times.

f = how many times

1 Multiply x × f

A new column: x times f.

It is the total of each row.

1 comes 4 times: 1 × 4 = 4.

2 comes 3 times: 2 × 3 = 6.

3 comes twice: 3 × 2 = 6.

And the same for the last row.

2 Add the columns

We add the f column: 10 numbers in all.

4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10

We add the x × f column: the total of all the numbers is 20.

4 + 6 + 6 + 4 = 20

3 Share equally

The mean shares the total equally: 20 divided by 10.

mean = 2010

Careful!

We can't just add 1, 2, 3 and 4 and divide by 4.

There are 10 numbers, not 4.

Each value counts f times.

Careful: not 1 + 2 + 3 + 44 ✗

20 divided by 10 is 2.

mean = 2

4 Check

Let's check: if all 10 numbers were 2, the total would be 2 times 10.

That is 20, the total.

So it is right!

2 × 10 = 20

Let's look back.

First: multiply x × f.

Then: add the columns.

Then: share equally.

Last: check.

Answer
mean = 2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Mean of x: 1, 2, 3, 4; f: 1, 7, 2, 9
Show the answer
mean = 3
