Glide reflect (-2, 3): reflect in the y-axis, then translate 3 up

Step by step

The question

Question: glide reflect the point P(−2, 3): reflect in the y-axis, then translate up 3.

P = (−2, 3)
= slide up 3, flip in y-axis

1 Draw the shape

Put the point on the grid.

The mirror line is the y-axis.

A glide reflection is a slide along the mirror line, and a flip in it.

Like footprints in the sand: left, right, left.

glide reflection = slide along the mirror line + flip

Careful!

The mirror line is upright.

So the slide goes up or down, along it.

Any other slide is not a glide.

Careful: the slide goes along the mirror line: up or down

2 Flip

Flip in the y-axis: x changes sign, y stays.

The rule: (−x, y).

flip in y-axis: (x, y) → (−x, y)

P is (−2, 3): it goes to (2, 3).

P(−2, 3) → P'(2, 3)

3 Slide

Up 3: y gets 3 bigger.

The rule: (x, y + 3).

slide up 3: (x, y) → (x, y + 3)

P' is (2, 3): it goes to (2, 6).

P'(2, 3) → P''(2, 6)

So the image is P''(2, 6).

P'' = (2, 6)

4 Check

Let's check the other way round: slide first, then flip.

For a glide, it must give the same points.

slide first, then flip:

The same points as before.

Right!

P(−2, 3) → (−2, 6) → (2, 6)

Let's look back.

First: draw the shape.

Then: flip.

Then: slide.

Last: check.

Answer
P'' = (2, 6)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

P(−3, 5): slide up 4, flip in y-axis
Show the answer
P'' = (3, 9)
