Step by step

The question

Question: find the derivative of f(x) = (2x + 1)(x − 4).

f(x) = (2x + 1)(x − 4)

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Name u and v

Call the first bracket u: 2x + 1.

u = 2x + 1

Call the second bracket v: x − 4.

v = x − 4

2 Find u′ and v′

The power rule on u gives u′ = 2.

u′ = 2

On v it gives v′ = 1.

v′ = 1

3 Use the rule

The product rule: the derivative of u times v is u′ v plus u v′.

Each bracket takes its turn to change, while the other one stays.

At the end we check it by opening the brackets first.

(uv)′ = u′v + uv′

Put them in.

f′(x) = (2)(x − 4) + (2x + 1)(1)

Careful!

Not u′ times v′!

Each part needs the other bracket.

Careful: not u′ × v′ = 2 ✗

4 Open the brackets

What is in front of a bracket multiplies every part inside.

= 2x − 8 + 2x + 1

−8 + 1 is −7.

2x + 2x is 4x.

So f′(x) = 4x − 7.

= 4x − 7

5 Check

Let's check another way: multiply the brackets out first.

f(x) is 2 x² − 7x − 4.

f(x) = 2x2 − 7x − 4

The power rule on that gives 4x − 7.

The same!

Right!

f′(x) = 4x − 7

6 Pick the choice

Our answer is f′(x) = 4x − 7.

That is choice C.

C) 4x − 7

7 Why not the others

A is 2.

Wrong: multiplied the two derivatives.

That is the Careful mistake from before.

A) 2 ✗ multiplied the two derivatives

B is 2x − 8.

Wrong: only the first part of the product rule.

B) 2x − 8 ✗ only the first part of the product rule

D is 4x − 8.

Wrong: lost the + 1 of (2x + 1): it is 2(x − 4) + (2x + 1).

D) 4x − 8 ✗ lost the + 1 of (2x + 1): it is 2(x − 4) + (2x + 1)

Let's look back.

First: name u and v.

Then: find u′ and v′.

Then: use the rule.

Then: open the brackets.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
= 4x − 7

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the derivative of f(x) = (5x + 1)(x − 3)
Show the answer
f′(x) = 10x − 14
