Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → ∞ of (4x² − x)/(2x² + 3).

lim x → ∞ 4x2 − x2x2 + 3

What happens to f(x) when x gets huge?

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Find the highest powers

x goes to infinity: x gets huge, bigger than any number.

Then the highest power wins.

On top it is 4x².

At the bottom it is 2x².

See it with x = 1000.

4x² is 4,000,000.

The other part is tiny next to that.

x = 1000: 4x²
= 4,000,000
−x: tiny next to it

2 Keep only those

So we keep only 4x² over 2x².

= lim x → ∞ 4x²2x²

x² over x² is 1.

Cross them out.

Only the numbers are left: 4/2.

They do not change when x grows.

= 42

4 divided by 2 is 2.

So the limit is 2.

= 2

3 Check

Let's check: put x = 1000 into the whole fraction.

A calculator gives about 1.9995.

x = 1000: f(x) ≈ 1.9995

With x = 10000 it is even closer to 2.

Right!

x = 10000: f(x) ≈ 1.9999

4 Pick the choice

Our answer is limit = 2.

That is choice C.

C) 2

5 Why not the others

A is 0.

Wrong: the top and the bottom have the same highest power.

A) 0 ✗ the top and the bottom have the same highest power

B is −1/3.

Wrong: used the numbers −1 and 3: use the numbers in front of the highest powers.

B) −13 ✗ used the numbers −1 and 3: use the numbers in front of the highest powers

D is infinity.

Wrong: the top does not grow faster than the bottom.

D) infinity ✗ the top does not grow faster than the bottom

Let's look back.

First: find the highest powers.

Then: keep only those.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
= 2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

lim x → ∞ 6x2 − x3x2 + 5
Show the answer
limit = 2
