Normal mean 40, sd 5: value with 80% below it

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Normal cut-offs · University Statistics

Step by step

The question

Question: X is normal, with mean 40 and SD 5: which value has 80% below it?

μ = 40, σ = 5: x with 80% below it?

A value with 80 percent below it is also called the 80th percentile.

80% below it = the 80th percentile

1 Shade the area

The bell, with the mean 40 in the middle.

x is the cut-off we want.

80 percent is below x: we shade it, on the left of x.

2 Area to the left

The z-table works with the area to the left of z.

z-table: area to the left of z

80 percent is 0.8.

It is already on the left.

area to the left = 0.8

Careful!

More than half the bell is on the left.

So x is above the mean, and z is positive.

Careful: more than half on the left: z is positive

3 Find it inside the table

Now we look for 0.8000 inside the table.

The closest number is 0.7995: row 0.8, column .04.

So z is about 0.84.

4 Back to x

Start at the mean, then go z SDs: x is the mean plus z times the SD.

x = μ + z × σ

0.84 times 5 is 4.2.

40 plus 4.2 is 44.2.

x = 40 + 0.84 × 5 = 40 + 4.2 = 44.2

5 Check

Let's check: the z of 44.2 is 44.2 minus 40, over 5.

That is 0.84.

z = 44.2 − 405 = 0.84

The table at 0.84 gives 0.7995: about 0.8 to the left.

So it is right!

table at z = 0.84: 0.7995 ≈ 0.8

Let's look back.

First: shade the area.

Then: area to the left.

Then: find it inside the table.

Then: back to x.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 40 + 0.84 × 5 = 40 + 4.2 = 44.2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

μ = 20, σ = 10: x with 80% below it?
Show the answer
x = 28.4
