Simplify (4x^2 - 3x + 2) - (2x^2 + x - 6)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Polynomials · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: simplify (4x² − 3x + 2) − (2x² + x − 6).

Simplify means: write it shorter, with the same value.

(4x2 − 3x + 2) − (2x2 + x − 6)

1 Open the brackets

A bracket with a plus or nothing in front can just be removed.

A minus in front of a bracket changes the sign of every part inside.

−( + ) → −, −( − ) → +

Now we have 4x² − 3x + 2 − 2x² − x + 6.

= 4x2 − 3x + 2 − 2x2 − x + 6

2 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x² terms go together.

Plain numbers go together.

Each colour is one kind.

like terms = same letters,
same powers

We move like terms next to each other.

Each term takes its sign with it.

= 4x2 − 2x2 − 3x − x + 2 + 6

4x² − 2x² is 2x².

It is like 4 apples take away 2 apples: that is 2 apples.

−3x − x is −4x.

2 + 6 is 8.

4x2 − 2x2 = 2x2
−3x − x = −4x
2 + 6 = 8

So the expression is 2x² − 4x + 8.

= 2x2 − 4x + 8

3 Check

Let's check.

We pick a number for each letter: x = 2.

We put it into the start.

Start: (4 × 22 − 3 × 2 + 2) − (2 × 22 + 2 − 6)
= 12 − 4 = 8

Now into our answer.

Answer: 2 × 22 − 4 × 2 + 8 = 8 − 8 + 8 = 8

Both give 8.

Same value, so 2x² − 4x + 8 is right!

Both give 8

Let's look back.

First: open the brackets.

Then: group like terms.

Last: check.

Answer
= 2x2 − 4x + 8

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Simplify (7x2 − 4x + 3) − (3x2 + x − 8)
Show the answer
4x2 − 5x + 11
