Solve g(t) = 3t - 6, g(2)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Functions · Algebra 2

Step by step

The question

Question: find g(2) for g(t) = 3t − 6.

g(t) = 3t − 6

g(t) is read "g of t".

It is a rule, called a function.

A number goes in for t.

The rule gives one answer out.

g(t) = "g of t"
t goes in → an answer comes out

1 Put the number in

g(2) means: put 2 in place of every t.

We write it in brackets.

g(2) = 3(2) − 6

2 Times and divide

Times comes before minus.

Order: ( ) → x² √ → × ÷ → + −
3(2) = 3 × 2

3(2) means 3 times 2.

3 times 2 is 6.

= 6 − 6

3 Plus and minus

6 minus 6 is 0.

g(2) = 0

So g(2) = 0.

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: times and divide.

Last: plus and minus.

Answer
g(2) = 0

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

g(t) = 7t − 9, find g(2)
Show the answer
g(2) = 5
