Sum from i = 2 to 6 of (i^2 - 1)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Sigma notation · Algebra 2

Step by step

The question

Question: work out the sum for i = 2 to 6 of (i² − 1).

Σi = 26(i2 − 1)

1 Read the sigma

Σ is the Greek letter sigma.

It means: add up.

Start with i = 2, and stop at i = 6.

That is 6 − 2 + 1: 5 terms.

For each i we work out i² − 1.

Σ = add up
start: i = 2, stop: i = 6
6 − 2 + 1 = 5 terms

Careful!

From 2 to 6 there are 5 terms, not 4: we count both ends.

So 6 − 2 + 1.

Careful: 6 − 2 = 4 is not the number of terms

2 Write the terms

i = 2: we put 2 in place of i.

We get 3.

i = 2: 22 − 1 = 4 − 1 = 3

i = 3 gives 8.

i = 3: 32 − 1 = 9 − 1 = 8
i = 4: 42 − 1 = 16 − 1 = 15
i = 5: 52 − 1 = 25 − 1 = 24

And i = 6 gives 35.

That is the last one.

i = 6: 62 − 1 = 36 − 1 = 35

3 Add them

Now we add the 5 terms.

Σi = 26(i2 − 1) = 3 + 8 + 15 + 24 + 35

So the sum is 85.

= 85

4 Check

Let's check: we add them again, backwards.

Backwards: 35 + 24 + 15 + 8 + 3 = 85

We get 85 again.

It works!

Let's look back.

First: read the sigma.

Then: write the terms.

Then: add them.

Last: check.

Answer
= 85

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

work out Σi = 27(i2 − 5)
