Step by step

The question

Question: find the volume of a prism with base area 20 cm² and length 4 cm.

1 Base times length

A prism has the same shape all the way through.

The face at the end is the base.

Its area is A = 20 cm².

The prism is that base, stacked up 4 cm long.

Like the circle of a cylinder.

So the volume is V = A × length.

V = A × length

Now put the numbers in: A = 20 and length = 4.

V = 20 × 4

20 times 4 is 80.

We count cubes, so the unit is cm³.

So the volume is 80 cm³.

V = 80 cm3
Answer
V = 80 cm3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find the volume.
