Step by step

The question

Question: write 14 + 35 as a product, using the biggest common factor.

14 + 35

1 Find the GCF

A factor of 14 is a whole number that goes into 14 exactly.

Nothing is left over.

The factors of 14: 1, 2, 7, 14.

The factors of 35: 1, 5, 7, 35.

14: 1, 2, 7, 14
35: 1, 5, 7, 35

The biggest number in both lists is 7.

= GCF = 7

2 Take it out

14 is 7 times 2.

35 is 7 times 5.

= 7 × 2 + 7 × 5

Both parts have times 7.

So we take the 7 out, in front of a bracket: 7(2 + 5).

This is the distributive property, backwards.

= 7(2 + 5)

Careful!

We need the brackets.

Without them, the 7 times only the 2.

Careful: not 7 × 2 + 5 ✗

3 Check

Let's check: 7 times 7 is 49.

And 14 plus 35 is 49.

The same.

So the answer is right!

7 × 7 = 49 and 14 + 35 = 49

Let's look back.

First: find the GCF.

Then: take it out.

Last: check.

Answer
Careful: not 7 × 2 + 5 ✗
