The question

Question: find the concavity and the inflection points of f(x) = x³ − 6x² + 5.

f(x) = x3 − 6x2 + 5

Concave up means the curve bends up, like a cup.

Concave down bends down, like a cap.

f″ is the slope of the slope.

When f″ is positive, the slope keeps growing, so the curve turns up: a cup.

When f″ is negative: a cap.

cup concave up: f″ > 0
cap concave down: f″ < 0

Careful!

Concave up is about the bending, not about going up.

A cup can go down on one side.

Careful: concave up is not "going up"

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Find f″(x)

First f′: the power rule on each term.

f′(x) = 3x^(3 − 1) − 6 × 2x^(2 − 1) + 0

Now we have f′(x) = 3x² − 12x.

= 3x2 − 12x

Then f″: the power rule again, on f′.

f″(x) = 3 × 2x^(2 − 1) − 12 × 1

Now we have f″(x) = 6x − 12.

= 6x − 12

2 Solve f″(x) = 0

The bending can only change where f″ is 0.

So we solve f″(x) = 0.

f″(x) = 0

That is 6x − 12 = 0.

6x − 12 = 0

Add 12 on both sides, so they stay equal.

6x = 12

Divide by 6: x = 2.

x = 2

3 Sign table for f″

A sign table for f″.

The number 2 cuts the line into 2 parts.

In each part, f″ keeps one sign.

So one test number per part is enough.

Take easy ones: 1, 3.

f″(1) = 6(1) − 12 = 6 − 12 = −6
f″(3) = 6(3) − 12 = 18 − 12 = 6

f″(1) is −6: negative.

So f bends down there: a cap.

cap

f″(3) is 6: positive.

So f bends up there: a cup.

cup
0

4 Inflection points

At x = 2, the bending changes: an inflection point.

infl.

Its y: put 2 into f.

We get −11.

f(2) = 23 − 6(2)2 + 5 = 8 − 24 + 5 = −11

f is concave up where f″ is positive: x > 2.

up ∪ : x > 2

f is concave down where f″ is negative: x < 2.

down ∩ : x < 2

And the inflection point is (2, −11).

inflection : (2, −11)

5 Check

Let's check with the graph.

A cap, then a cup.

It changes at the inflection point.

Right!

6 Pick the choice

Our answer is concave up: x > 2; concave down: x < 2; inflection: (2, −11).

That is choice C.

C) (2, −11)

7 Why not the others

A is (0, 5).

Wrong: f′ = 0 there: that is a turning point.

A) (0, 5) ✗ f′ = 0 there: that is a turning point

B is (4, −27).

Wrong: f′ = 0 there: the other turning point.

B) (4, −27) ✗ f′ = 0 there: the other turning point

D is (−2, −27).

Wrong: solved 6x − 12 = 0 with the wrong sign.

D) (−2, −27) ✗ solved 6x − 12 = 0 with the wrong sign

Let's look back.

First: find f″(x).

Then: solve f″(x) = 0.

Then: sign table for f″.

Then: inflection points.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
inflection : (2, −11)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the concavity and the inflection points of f(x) = x3 − 3x2 + 4x − 4
Show the answer
concave up: x > 1; concave down: x < 1; inflection: (1, −2)
