Step by step

The question

Question: make a circle graph of walk 50%, bus 25%, car 25%.

walk 50%, bus 25%, car 25%

A circle graph shows the parts of a whole as slices.

The whole circle is 360 degrees.

the whole circle = 360°

1 Each part of 360°

Walk is 50% of the circle.

50% is 0.5.

0.5 times 360 is 180°.

= walk: 50% × 360 = 0.5 × 360 = 180°

Careful!

A percent is out of 100.

Degrees are out of 360.

50% of the circle is 180°.

Careful: not 50% → 50° ✗

Bus: 25% of 360 is 90°.

= bus: 25% × 360 = 0.25 × 360 = 90°

Car: 25% of 360 is 90°.

= car: 25% × 360 = 0.25 × 360 = 90°

2 Draw the circle graph

We draw a circle and start at the top.

Walk: a slice of 180°, going round like a clock.

Then bus, 90°, and so on.

So the slices are walk 180°, bus 90° and car 90°.

= walk 180°, bus 90°, car 90°

3 Check

Let's check: the slices fill the circle: 180 plus 90 plus 90 is 360.

So the answer is right!

180 + 90 + 90 = 360

Let's look back.

First: each part of 360°.

Then: draw the circle graph.

Last: check.

Answer
= walk 180°, bus 90°, car 90°

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

walk 75%, bus 15%, car 10%
Show the answer
walk 270°, bus 54°, car 36°
