DE ∥ BC, AE = 9, AC = 15, BC = 25, find DE

Step by step, with the reason for every step · A line parallel to a side · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: D E is parallel to B C, with AE = 9, AC = 15, BC = 25: find DE.

1 Use the parallel line

D E is parallel to B C: the arrows show it.

So triangle A D E has the same angles as A B C: they are similar.

The small triangle is the big one made smaller: every side by the same scale.

2 Write the proportion

So: AE over AC equals DE over BC.

AEAC = DEBC

Careful!

Keep the same order on both sides: the matching parts on top, the matching parts at the bottom.

Careful: not AEAC = BCDE ✗

Put the numbers in.

We call DE x: 9/15 = x/25.

915 = x25

3 Cross multiply

When two fractions are equal, we can cross multiply.

These two are equal.

9 × 25 = x × 15

Work out the multiplications.

225 = 15x

Let's swap the two sides, so x is on the left.

15x = 225

4 Remove the 15

15x means 15 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 15, we divide by 15.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

15x15 = 22515

15 divided by 15 is 1.

So just x is left.

225 divided by 15 is 15.

22515 = 15

So x = 15!

x = 15

5 Check

Let's check: put 15 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 915 = 9÷315÷3 = 35

Now the right side.

Right: 1525 = 15÷525÷5 = 35

Both sides are 3/5.

So x = 15 is right!

Both sides equal 35

So DE = 15.

Let's look back.

First: use the parallel line.

Then: write the proportion.

Then: cross multiply.

Then: remove the 15.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 15
