Step by step

The question

Question: find the domain and range of the points (−2, 0), (0, 3), (1, 3), (4, −1).

(−2, 0), (0, 3), (1, 3), (4, −1)

The domain is all the x's we can put in.

The range is all the answers, the y's, that can come out.

domain = the x's that can go in
range = the y's that can come out

1 Read the x's

The first number of each point is its x: −2, 0, 1 and 4.

So the domain is {−2, 0, 1, 4}.

domain = { −2, 0, 1, 4 }

2 Read the y's

The second number of each point is its y: 0, 3, 3 and −1.

3 is there twice.

We write it once.

So the range is {−1, 0, 3}.

range = { −1, 0, 3 }

Let's look back.

First: read the x's.

Last: read the y's.

Answer
range = { −1, 0, 3 }

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find the domain and range of the points (−3, 0), (0, 4), (1, 4), (9, −1)
Show the answer
domain: {−3, 0, 1, 9}, range: {−1, 0, 4}
