Range of f(x) = 3x - 4

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Domain and range · Algebra 2

Step by step

The question

Question: find the range of f(x) = 3x − 4.

f(x) = 3x − 4

The range is all the answers, the y's, that can come out.

range = the y's that can come out

1 What can come out

A line goes up for ever and down for ever.

So every y can come out: the range is all real numbers.

range : all real numbers

2 Check

Let's check: 10 gives a big y.

x = 10: y = 3(10) − 4 = 30 − 4 = 26

And −10 gives a big negative y.

x = −10: y = 3(−10) − 4 = −30 − 4 = −34

Let's look back.

First: what can come out.

Last: check.

Answer
range : all real numbers

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

range of f(x) = 2x − 4
Show the answer
range: all real numbers
