Find lim x->1 (√x - 1)/(x - 1)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Limits by the conjugate · Calculus

Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → 1 of (√x − 1)/(x − 1).

lim x → 1 √x − 1x − 1 =

1 Put the number in

Put 1 in place of x.

The top is 0, and the bottom is 0.

√1 − 11 − 1 = 00

The square root of 1 is 1.

1 minus 1 is 0.

√1 = 1, so 1 − 1 = 0

0/0 has no value.

It tells us to work more.

00: no value yet. Work more!

2 Multiply by the conjugate

The conjugate of √x − 1 is √x + 1: the same two terms, with the sign swapped.

conjugate of √x − 1 is √x + 1

Multiply the top and the bottom by the conjugate.

lim x → 1 √x − 1x − 1 = lim x → 1 √x − 1x − 1 × √x + 1√x + 1

Something over itself is 1.

So the value does not change.

√x + 1√x + 1 = 1

Careful!

Both the top and the bottom!

One alone would change the value.

Careful: not only the top × (√x + 1) ✗

3 Multiply out

Remember: a minus b, times a plus b, is a squared minus b squared.

The middle terms cancel.

(a − b)(a + b) = a2 − b2

On top: (√x − 1) times (√x + 1).

That is the root squared, minus 1 squared.

The bottom we leave as it is.

= lim x → 1 (√x)2 − 12(x − 1)(√x + 1)

A square root squared is just what is inside.

So it is x − 1.

(√x)2 − 12 = x − 1

Now (x − 1) is on the top and on the bottom.

= lim x → 1 x − 1(x − 1)(√x + 1)

4 Cancel

x gets close to 1, but it is never 1.

So x − 1 is not 0.

x ≠ 1, so x − 1 ≠ 0

Something over itself is 1.

So we cross out (x − 1) on the top and the bottom.

Write what is left: 1 over (√x + 1).

= lim x → 1 1√x + 1

5 Put the number in again

Now the 0 is gone.

Put 1 in again.

= 1√1 + 1

The square root of 1 is 1.

= 11 + 1

So the limit is 1/2.

= 12

6 Check

Let's check with numbers close to 1.

A calculator gives 0.5013 at x = 0.99.

x = 0.99: f(x) ≈ 0.5013

And 0.4988 at x = 1.01.

Both are close to 1/2, which is 0.5.

Right!

x = 1.01: f(x) ≈ 0.4988

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: multiply by the conjugate.

Then: multiply out.

Then: cancel.

Then: put the number in again.

Last: check.

Answer
= 12

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

lim x → 16 √x − 4x − 16
Show the answer
limit = 18
