Find lim x->16 (4 - √x)/(x - 16)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Limits by the conjugate · Calculus

Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → 16 of (4 − √x)/(x − 16).

lim x → 16 4 − √xx − 16 =

1 Put the number in

Put 16 in place of x.

The top is 0, and the bottom is 0.

4 − √1616 − 16 = 00

The square root of 16 is 4.

4 minus 4 is 0.

√16 = 4, so 4 − 4 = 0

0/0 has no value.

It tells us to work more.

00: no value yet. Work more!

2 Multiply by the conjugate

The conjugate of 4 − √x is 4 + √x: the same two terms, with the sign swapped.

conjugate of 4 − √x is 4 + √x

Multiply the top and the bottom by the conjugate.

lim x → 16 4 − √xx − 16 = lim x → 16 4 − √xx − 16 × 4 + √x4 + √x

Something over itself is 1.

So the value does not change.

4 + √x4 + √x = 1

Careful!

Both the top and the bottom!

One alone would change the value.

Careful: not only the top × (4 + √x) ✗

3 Multiply out

Remember: a minus b, times a plus b, is a squared minus b squared.

The middle terms cancel.

(a − b)(a + b) = a2 − b2

On top: (4 − √x) times (4 + √x).

That is the root squared, minus 4 squared.

The bottom we leave as it is.

= lim x → 16 42 − (√x)2(x − 16)(4 + √x)

A square root squared is just what is inside.

So it is 16 − x.

42 − (√x)2 = 16 − x

16 − x is the same as minus (x − 16).

16 − x = −(x − 16)

Now (x − 16) is on the top and on the bottom.

= lim x → 16 −(x − 16)(x − 16)(4 + √x)

4 Cancel

x gets close to 16, but it is never 16.

So x − 16 is not 0.

x ≠ 16, so x − 16 ≠ 0

Something over itself is 1.

So we cross out (x − 16) on the top and the bottom.

Write what is left: −1/(4 + √x).

= lim x → 16 −14 + √x

5 Put the number in again

Now the 0 is gone.

Put 16 in again.

= −14 + √16

The square root of 16 is 4.

= −14 + 4

So the limit is −1/8.

= −18

6 Check

Let's check with numbers close to 16.

A calculator gives −0.125 at x = 15.99.

x = 15.99: f(x) ≈ −0.125

And −0.125 at x = 16.01.

Both are close to −1/8, which is −0.125.

Right!

x = 16.01: f(x) ≈ −0.125

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: multiply by the conjugate.

Then: multiply out.

Then: cancel.

Then: put the number in again.

Last: check.

Answer
= −18

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

lim x → 1 1 − √xx − 1
Show the answer
limit = −12
