Linear or exponential: x 1, 2, 3, 4; y 5, 9, 13, 17

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Linear or exponential · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: is this table linear or exponential: x is 1, 2, 3, 4, and y is 5, 9, 13, 17?

x: 1, 2, 3, 4; y: 5, 9, 13, 17

We write it as a table.

x goes up by 1 each time.

1 Check the differences

Linear means: the same number is added each time.

So we look at the change from one y to the next: plus 4, then plus 4, then plus 4.

We add 4 every time.

The same number.

So the table is linear.

= + 4, + 4, + 4: the same → linear

2 Write the rule

The start value is y at x = 0.

The table starts at x = 1, so we go back 1 step.

y at 0 is 1.

x = 0: 5 − 4 = 1

A linear rule is y = m x plus b.

m is the change when x goes up 1.

b is the start value, at x = 0.

y = mx + b
m = the change for 1, b = start

Careful!

Not just 4x.

At x = 0, y is 1, not 0.

The start value goes in too.

Careful: not y = 4x ✗

So the rule is y = 4x + 1.

= y = 4x + 1

3 Check

Let's check with the last pair: x = 4.

The rule gives 17.

The table says 17.

So the rule is right!

x = 4: 4(4) + 1 = 17

Let's look back.

First: check the differences.

Then: write the rule.

Last: check.

Answer
= y = 4x + 1

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Is this table linear or exponential: x: 1, 2, 3, 4; y: 10, 15, 20, 25
Show the answer
linear: y = 5x + 5
