Step by step

The question

Question: is this table linear or exponential: x is 1, 2, 3, 4, and y is 6, 12, 24, 48?

x: 1, 2, 3, 4; y: 6, 12, 24, 48

We write it as a table.

x goes up by 1 each time.

1 Check the differences

Linear means: the same number is added each time.

So we look at the change from one y to the next: plus 6, then plus 12, then plus 24.

The changes are not the same.

So it is not linear.

= + 6, + 12, + 24: not the same

Careful!

Going up each time does not make it linear.

Linear needs the same number added every time.

Careful: it goes up each time, but that is not linear

2 Check the ratios

Exponential means: we multiply by the same number each time.

So we divide each y by the one before.

12/6 is 2.

24/12 is 2.

48/24 is 2.

= 126 = 2, 2412 = 2, 4824 = 2

The same number.

So the table is exponential.

= × 2 every time → exponential

3 Write the rule

An exponential rule is y = a times b to the power x.

a is the start value, at x = 0.

b is the number we multiply by.

y = a × bx
a = start, b = the ratio

The start value is y at x = 0.

The table starts at x = 1, so we go back: divide by 2.

y at 0 is 3.

x = 0: 6 ÷ 2 = 3

So the rule is y = 3 times 2 to the power x.

= y = 3 × 2x

4 Check

Let's check with the last pair: x = 4.

The rule gives 48.

The table says 48.

So the rule is right!

x = 4: 3 × 24 = 3 × 16 = 48

Let's look back.

First: check the differences.

Then: check the ratios.

Then: write the rule.

Last: check.

Answer
= y = 3 × 2x

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Is this table linear or exponential: x: 1, 2, 3, 4; y: 3, 9, 27, 81
Show the answer
exponential: y = 3x
