Step by step

The question

Question: find the mean of this frequency table.

The values x are 0, 1, 2 and 3.

Their frequencies f are 5, 8, 4 and 3.

Mean of the frequency table

x is the value.

f is how many times it comes.

So 0 comes 5 times.

f = how many times

1 Multiply x × f

A new column: x times f.

It is the total of each row.

0 comes 5 times: 0 × 5 = 0.

1 comes 8 times: 1 × 8 = 8.

2 comes 4 times: 2 × 4 = 8.

And the same for the last row.

2 Add the columns

We add the f column: 20 numbers in all.

5 + 8 + 4 + 3 = 20

We add the x × f column: the total of all the numbers is 25.

0 + 8 + 8 + 9 = 25

3 Share equally

The mean shares the total equally: 25 divided by 20.

mean = 2520

Careful!

We can't just add 0, 1, 2 and 3 and divide by 4.

There are 20 numbers, not 4.

Each value counts f times.

Careful: not 0 + 1 + 2 + 34 ✗

25 divided by 20 is 1.25.

mean = 1.25

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the mean is about 1.3.

mean ≈ 1.3
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

4 Check

Let's check: if all 20 numbers were 1.25, the total would be 1.25 times 20.

That is 25, the total.

So it is right!

1.25 × 20 = 25

Let's look back.

First: multiply x × f.

Then: add the columns.

Then: share equally.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Mean of x: 2, 3, 4, 5; f: 5, 9, 1, 8
Show the answer
mean ≈ 3.5
