Step by step

The question

Question: find the population standard deviation of 2, 4 and 6.

Population SD of 2, 4, 6

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 12.

12 divided by 3 is 4.

mean = 2 + 4 + 63 = 123 = 4

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

2 minus 4 is −2.

Negative: 2 is below the mean.

4 minus 4 is 0.

6 minus 4 is 2.

Above the mean.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

−2 + 0 + 2 = 0

Careful!

Adding the distances always gives 0.

So we square them first.

Squares are never negative.

Careful: the distances always add to 0: square them first

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

−2 squared is −2 times −2.

Negative times negative is positive: 4.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 4 plus 0 plus 4 is 8.

4 + 0 + 4 = 8

5 Divide

These numbers are the whole group, a population.

So we divide by how many there are.

population: ÷ n

8 divided by 3 is 2.6667 and more digits.

This is the variance.

variance = 83 = 2.6667…

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 2.6667… is 1.6330 and more digits.

SD = √2.6667… = 1.6330…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 1.6.

SD ≈ 1.6
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 1.6 away from the mean, 4.

the numbers are about 1.6 from the mean 4

7 Check

Let's check: 1.6 squared is 2.56.

That is about the variance, 2.67.

So it is right!

1.62 = 2.56 ≈ 2.67

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
