Step by step

The question

Question: find the sample standard deviation of 6, 9, 3, 7 and 5.

Sample SD of 6, 9, 3, 7, 5

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 30.

30 divided by 5 is 6.

mean = 6 + 9 + 3 + 7 + 55 = 305 = 6

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

6 minus 6 is 0.

It is right on the mean.

9 minus 6 is 3.

And the same for the rest.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

0 + 3 − 3 + 1 − 1 = 0

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

0 squared is 0.

−3 squared is −3 times −3.

Negative times negative is positive: 9.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 0 plus 9 plus 9 plus 1 plus 1 is 20.

0 + 9 + 9 + 1 + 1 = 20

5 Divide

These numbers are a sample: only part of the whole group.

For a sample we divide by one less than how many, n minus 1.

sample: ÷ (n − 1)

There are 5 numbers, so we divide by 5 minus 1, which is 4.

20 divided by 4 is 5.

variance = 205 − 1 = 204 = 5

Careful!

For a sample we divide by 4, not by 5.

Careful: not ÷ 5 ✗

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 5 is 2.2361 and more digits.

SD = √5 = 2.2361…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 2.2.

SD ≈ 2.2
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 2.2 away from the mean, 6.

the numbers are about 2.2 from the mean 6

7 Check

Let's check: 2.2 squared is 4.84.

That is about the variance, 5.

So it is right!

2.22 = 4.84 ≈ 5

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Sample SD of 3, 12, 1, 5, 9
Show the answer
SD ≈ 4.5
