Step by step

The question

Question: find the sample standard deviation of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Sample SD of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 30.

30 divided by 5 is 6.

mean = 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 105 = 305 = 6

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

2 minus 6 is −4.

Negative: 2 is below the mean.

4 minus 6 is −2.

And the same for the rest.

8 minus 6 is 2.

Above the mean.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

−4 − 2 + 0 + 2 + 4 = 0

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

−4 squared is −4 times −4.

Negative times negative is positive: 16.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 16 plus 4 plus 0 plus 4 plus 16 is 40.

16 + 4 + 0 + 4 + 16 = 40

5 Divide

These numbers are a sample: only part of the whole group.

For a sample we divide by one less than how many, n minus 1.

sample: ÷ (n − 1)

There are 5 numbers, so we divide by 5 minus 1, which is 4.

40 divided by 4 is 10.

variance = 405 − 1 = 404 = 10

Careful!

For a sample we divide by 4, not by 5.

Careful: not ÷ 5 ✗

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 10 is 3.1623 and more digits.

SD = √10 = 3.1623…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 3.2.

SD ≈ 3.2
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 3.2 away from the mean, 6.

the numbers are about 3.2 from the mean 6

7 Check

Let's check: 3.2 squared is 10.24.

That is about the variance, 10.

So it is right!

3.22 = 10.24 ≈ 10

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
