Step by step

The question

Question: write the ratio of 250 milliliters to 1 liter in its simplest form.

250 ml : 1 L

Careful!

The units are not the same: milliliters and liters.

250 to 1 would compare different things.

Careful: not 250 : 1 ✗

1 Same units

A ratio only compares amounts in the same unit.

We change to the smaller unit, milliliters, so there are no fractions.

1 liter is 1000 milliliters.

1 L = 1000 ml

So 1 liter is 1 times 1000: 1000 milliliters.

= 1 L = 1 × 1000 ml = 1000 ml

2 Drop the units

Now the ratio is 250 milliliters to 1000 milliliters.

= 250 ml : 1000 ml

Both are in milliliters.

The same units cancel, so we cross them out.

That leaves 250 to 1000.

= 250 : 1000

3 Simplify

250 and 1000 can both be divided by 250.

We divide both parts by 250.

The ratio stays the same.

= 250 ÷ 250 : 1000 ÷ 250

250 divided by 250 is 1.

1000 divided by 250 is 4.

So the ratio is 1 to 4.

= 1 : 4

4 Check

Let's check: times each part by 250.

We get 250 milliliters and 1000 milliliters again.

1 × 250 = 250 ml, 4 × 250 = 1000 ml

And 1000 milliliters divided by 1000 is 1 liter, as in the question.

So the answer is right!

1000 ml = 1000 ÷ 1000 = 1 L

Let's look back.

First: same units.

Then: drop the units.

Then: simplify.

Last: check.

Answer
= 1 : 4
