The question

Question: share 60 in the ratio 1 to 4.

Share 60 in the ratio 1 : 4

The ratio says how many equal parts each one gets: 1 for the first and 4 for the second.

1st: 1 part, 2nd: 4 parts

Careful!

1 to 4 does not mean dividing 60 by 1 and by 4.

It counts parts of the same size.

Careful: not 60 ÷ 1, 60 ÷ 4 ✗

1 Count the parts

All together there are 1 plus 4: 5 equal parts.

1 + 4 = 5 parts

2 Draw the bar

We draw the amount as a bar of 5 equal parts.

1 part for the first share and 4 parts for the second share.

All 5 parts together make 60.

3 Find one part

5 parts make 60.

So one part is 60 divided by 5: 12.

1 part = 60 ÷ 5 = 12

Every part is 12.

4 Find each share

The first share has 1 part: 1 times 12 is 12.

1st: 1 × 12 = 12

The second share has 4 parts: 4 times 12 is 48.

2nd: 4 × 12 = 48

So the shares are 12 and 48.

12 and 48

5 Check

Let's check.

The shares add up: 12 plus 48 is 60.

12 + 48 = 60

And divided by 12, they give 1 to 4 again.

So the answer is right!

12 : 48 → ÷ 12 → 1 : 4

Let's look back.

First: count the parts.

Then: draw the bar.

Then: find one part.

Then: find each share.

Last: check.
