Step by step

The question

Question: work out (5 + 2i) + (3 + 4i).

(5 + 2i) + (3 + 4i)

No real number times itself is negative.

So we use a new number: i, the square root of minus 1.

So i squared is minus 1.

i = √(−1)
i² = −1

1 Open the brackets

A bracket with a plus or nothing in front can just be removed.

= 5 + 2i + 3 + 4i

2 Group like parts

Like parts go together: the plain numbers are the real parts.

The parts with i go together too.

Real parts: 5 + 3 = 8.

i parts: 2i + 4i = 6i.

5 + 3 = 8
2i + 4i = 6i

So the answer is 8 + 6i.

= 8 + 6i

3 Check

Let's check: take away 3 + 4i.

We should get the first number again: 5 + 2i.

Check: (8 + 6i) − (3 + 4i) = 5 + 2i

Let's look back.

First: open the brackets.

Then: group like parts.

Last: check.

Answer
= 8 + 6i

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Work out (9 + 3i) + (5 + 6i)
Show the answer
14 + 9i
