Solve 2/7 = 6/x

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Proportions · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: solve 2/7 = 6 over x.

Two fractions are equal.

27 = 6x

1 Cross multiply

When two fractions are equal, we can cross multiply.

These two are equal.

2 × x = 6 × 7

Work out the multiplications.

2x = 42

2 Remove the 2

2x means 2 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 2, we divide by 2.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

2x2 = 422

2 divided by 2 is 1.

So just x is left.

42 divided by 2 is 21.

422 = 21

So x = 21!

x = 21

3 Check

Let's check: put 21 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 27

Now the right side.

Right: 621 = 6÷321÷3 = 27

Both sides are 2/7.

So x = 21 is right!

Both sides equal 27

Let's look back.

First: cross multiply.

Then: remove the 2.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 21

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

612 = 7x
Show the answer
x = 14
