Step by step

The question

Question: find x when the angles in a triangle are 2x, 3x and 5x.

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Use the angle fact

The three angles in a triangle always add up to 180°.

So we add them all and make it 180: 2x + 3x + 5x = 180.

2x + 3x + 5x = 180

2 Group like terms

The x terms go together.

2x + 3x + 5x = 10x

Now we have 10x = 180.

10x = 180

Is x alone now?

Not yet: 10x means 10 times x.

How do we remove it?

3 Remove the 10

10x means 10 times x.

To remove times 10, we divide by 10.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

10x10 = 18010

10 divided by 10 is 1.

They cancel each other.

So just x is left.

180 divided by 10 is 18.

So x = 18.

x = 18

4 Check

Let's check: put x = 18 in each angle.

2x = 2 × 18 = 36
3x = 3 × 18 = 54
5x = 5 × 18 = 90

Now add all the angles.

36 + 54 + 90 = 180

They add up to 180°.

So x = 18 is right!

5 Pick the choice

Our answer is x = 18.

That is choice B.

B) 18

6 Why not the others

A is 10.

Wrong: 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 is how many x's, not x.

A) 10 ✗ 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 is how many x's, not x

C is 36.

Wrong: 360 ÷ 10: a triangle has 180°, not 360°.

C) 36 ✗ 360 ÷ 10: a triangle has 180°, not 360°

D is 54.

Wrong: that is 3x, not x.

D) 54 ✗ that is 3x, not x

Let's look back.

First: use the angle fact.

Then: group like terms.

Then: remove the 10.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
x = 18
