Step by step

The question

Question: translate the point P(0, 2) left 3, down 1.

P = (0, 2)
= left 3, down 1

1 Draw the shape

Put the point on the grid.

2 Read the move

Left 3 means x gets 3 smaller: x − 3.

Left 3 → x − 3

Down 1 means y gets 1 smaller: y − 1.

Down 1 → y − 1

So every point (x, y) goes to (x − 3, y − 1).

(x, y) → (x − 3, y − 1)

3 Move each point

Start at P.

Go left 3.

Then go down 1.

We land on the new point.

We call the new point P prime.

The little mark means: the new P.

P is (0, 2).

Left 3: 0 minus 3 is −3.

Down 1: 2 minus 1 is 1.

So P' is (−3, 1).

P(0, 2) → (0 − 3, 2 − 1) = P'(−3, 1)

Careful!

Down makes y smaller.

So we take 1 away.

We do not add it.

Careful: not P'(0 − 3, 2 + 1) ✗

4 The new point

So the image is P'(−3, 1).

P' = (−3, 1)

5 Check

Let's check.

Draw an arrow from each point to its new point.

The arrow goes left 3, down 1.

Right!

P → P': left 3, down 1

Let's look back.

First: draw the shape.

Then: read the move.

Then: move each point.

Then: the new point.

Last: check.

Answer
P' = (−3, 1)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

P(−2, 3): left 4, down 1
Show the answer
P' = (−6, 2)
