Step by step

The question

Question: translate the shape A(2, −1), B(5, −1) and C(2, −3) left 3, up 4.

A(2, −1), B(5, −1) and C(2, −3)
= left 3, up 4

1 Draw the shape

Put the points on the grid and join them.

2 Read the move

Left 3 means x gets 3 smaller: x − 3.

Left 3 → x − 3

Up 4 means y gets 4 bigger: y + 4.

Up 4 → y + 4

So every point (x, y) goes to (x − 3, y + 4).

(x, y) → (x − 3, y + 4)

3 Move each point

Start at A.

Go left 3.

Then go up 4.

We land on the new point.

We call the new point A prime.

The little mark means: the new A.

A is (2, −1).

Left 3: 2 minus 3 is −1.

Up 4: −1 plus 4 is 3.

So A' is (−1, 3).

A(2, −1) → (2 − 3, −1 + 4) = A'(−1, 3)

Careful!

Left makes x smaller.

So we take 3 away.

We do not add it.

Careful: not A'(2 + 3, −1 + 4) ✗

Now B: 5 minus 3 is 2.

−1 plus 4 is 3.

So B' is (2, 3).

B(5, −1) → (5 − 3, −1 + 4) = B'(2, 3)

Now C: 2 minus 3 is −1.

−3 plus 4 is 1.

So C' is (−1, 1).

C(2, −3) → (2 − 3, −3 + 4) = C'(−1, 1)

4 Draw the image

Join the new points.

This new shape is called the image.

So the image is A'(−1, 3), B'(2, 3) and C'(−1, 1).

A'(−1, 3), B'(2, 3) and C'(−1, 1)

5 Check

Let's check.

Draw an arrow from each point to its new point.

All the arrows are the same: the same length, the same way.

So the shape slid, without turning.

Right!

A → A', B → B', C → C': left 3, up 4

Let's look back.

First: draw the shape.

Then: read the move.

Then: move each point.

Then: draw the image.

Last: check.

Answer
A'(−1, 3), B'(2, 3) and C'(−1, 1)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

A(3, −1) B(6, −1) C(3, −3): left 5, up 4
Show the answer
A'(−2, 3), B'(1, 3) and C'(−2, 1)
