Step by step

The question

Question: Two positive numbers multiply to 64.

Find the smallest possible sum.

1 Draw and name

Call the first number x, and the second y.

x = the first number
y = the second number

2 Write the sum

The sum is x plus y.

S = x + y

3 Use only one letter

They multiply to 64: x times y is 64.

xy = 64

So y = 64 over x.

y = 64x

Put it in place of y.

S = x + 64x

4 Which x make sense

The numbers are positive: x is more than 0.

x > 0 =

5 Slope = 0

The smallest value is where the slope is 0.

x gives 1.

64/x is 64x to the power −1, which gives −64/x².

S′(x) = 1 − 64x2
64x = 64x−1 → −64x−2

Set it to 0, and move the fraction across.

64x2 = 1

Times both sides by x², so they stay equal.

64 = x2

x squared is 64, so x is 8.

Minus 8 squared is also 64, but x must be positive.

x = 8 (not −8)

Careful!

The numbers must be positive.

Only x = 8 is allowed.

Careful: not x = −8 ✗

6 Make sure it is the smallest

Before 8, the slope is negative: going down.

After it, positive: going up.

Down, then up: the bottom.

A minimum.

S′(7) = −0.31 < 0 ↘, S′(9) = 0.21 > 0 ↗

7 Answer the question

The other number: 64/8 is 8.

The same number!

y = 648 = 8

So the smallest sum is 16.

S(8) = 8 + 8 = 16

8 Check

Let's check with x a bit smaller: 7 gives 16.14.

x = 7: S = 16.14

And x = 9 gives 16.11.

Both are bigger than 16.

Right!

x = 9: S = 16.11

Let's look back.

First: draw and name.

Then: write the sum.

Then: use only one letter.

Then: which x make sense.

Then: slope = 0.

Then: make sure it is the smallest.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.

Answer
S(8) = 8 + 8 = 16

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Show the answer
smallest sum = 28
