The question

Question: work out 3.6 − 1.45.

3.6 − 1.45

1 Take away

We write 3.6 on top and 1.45 under it, with the points in line.

We fill the gap with a 0: 3.6 is the same as 3.60.

A 0 at the end does not change the number.

0 is smaller than 5, so we cannot take 5 away from 0.

We borrow 10 from the next column: the 6 becomes 5, and the 0 becomes 10.

10 − 5 = 5.

5 − 4 = 1.

The point goes straight down.

3 − 1 = 2.

3.6 minus 1.45 is 2.15.

= 2.15

So the answer is 2.15.

Answer
= 2.15
