Step by step

The question

Question: write 5 + 9 + 13 + 17 using sigma notation.

5 + 9 + 13 + 17

1 Find the rule

The rule from the sequences lesson, with i for the term number: the first term, plus (i − 1) times 4.

d = 4: ai = 5 + (i − 1) × 4

Open the bracket: i times 4 is 4i, and −1 times 4 is −4.

ai = 5 + 4i − 4

Plain numbers go together.

So the rule is 4i + 1.

ai = 4i + 1

2 Count the terms

i counts the terms: 1, 2, 3, 4.

There are 4 terms.

So i starts at 1 and stops at 4.

i = 1, 2, 3, 4

Careful!

The stop number on Σ is the last i, 4.

It is not the last term, 17.

Careful: not Σi = 117(4i + 1) ✗

3 Write it with Σ

So we write: the sum for i = 1 to 4 of 4i + 1.

= Σi = 14(4i + 1)

4 Check

Let's check: put i = 1, 2, up to 4 into 4i + 1.

i = 1 gives 5, i = 2 gives 9, and so on.

i = 1 to 4: 5 + 9 + 13 + 17

That is the sum we started with.

It works!

Let's look back.

First: find the rule.

Then: count the terms.

Then: write it with Σ.

Last: check.

Answer
= Σi = 14(4i + 1)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

write 7 + 13 + 19 + 25 with Σ
Show the answer
Σi = 14(6i + 1)
