Step by step

The question

Question: write 76000 in scientific notation.

76000

1 What it looks like

Scientific notation is a number from 1 to under 10, times a power of 10.

a × 10n a: from 1 to under 10

2 Move the point

The point is at the end of 76000.

We don't write it, but it is there.

We move it to the left, until there is just one digit before the point, and it is not 0.

We count the jumps: 1, 2, 3, 4.

4 jumps to the left.

Now it says 7.6000.

We moved the point 4 places to the left.

76000 is bigger than 1, so the power of 10 is 4: 10⁴.

10⁴ is 10000.

104 = 10000

So 76000 is 7.6000 × 10⁴.

= 7.6000 × 104

Zeros at the end, after the point, can go: 7.6000 is 7.6.

So we get 7.6 × 10⁴.

= 7.6 × 104

3 Check

Let's check: times 10000 moves the point 4 back to the right.

We get 76000 again!

7.6 × 10000 = 76000

Let's look back.

First: what it looks like.

Then: move the point.

Last: check.

Answer
= 7.6 × 104
