Write x^2 - 8x + 10 in vertex form

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Vertex form by completing the square · Algebra 2

Step by step

The question

Question: write y = x² − 8x + 10 in vertex form.

y = x2 − 8x + 10

Vertex form is a times (x minus h) squared, plus k.

The vertex, the turning point, is (h, k).

vertex form: a(x − h)2 + k

1 Complete the square

We add 16 to fill the corner.

And we take 16 away straight after, so nothing changes.

= x2 − 8x + 16 − 16 + 10

2 Write the square

The full square is x − 4 on each side.

So these three parts are (x − 4) squared.

x2 − 8x + 16 = (x − 4)2

We write the bracket squared.

The rest stays.

= (x − 4)2 − 16 + 10

3 Tidy up

−16 plus 10 is −6.

−16 + 10 = −6

So y = (x − 4)² − 6.

This is vertex form.

= (x − 4)2 − 6

4 Read the vertex

In vertex form we need x minus h.

x − 4 is x minus 4.

So h = 4, and k = −6.

x − 4 = x − 4

So the vertex is (4, −6).

vertex = (4, −6)

Careful!

x minus 4 means h is 4, not −4.

The sign in the bracket is the opposite of h.

Careful: not vertex (−4, −6) ✗

5 Check

Let's check: open the brackets again.

(x − 4) squared is x² − 8x + 16.

Check: (x − 4)2 − 6 = x2 − 8x + 16 − 6
= x2 − 8x + 10

We get x² − 8x + 10 again.

It works!

Let's look back.

First: complete the square.

Then: write the square.

Then: tidy up.

Then: read the vertex.

Last: check.

Answer
= (x − 4)2 − 6

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

y = x2 − 6x + 5 in vertex form
Show the answer
y = (x − 3)2 − 4
