z = 3xy, x = t^2, y = t, find dz/dt

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Chain rule with several variables · Calculus 3

Step by step

The question

Question: find dz/dt when z = 3xy, x = t² and y = t.

z = 3xy, x = t², y = t

1 Draw the tree

Draw a tree.

z depends on x and y.

Each of them depends on t.

Each branch has its own slope.

To go from z down to t, there are two paths.

Multiply along each path, then add the paths.

2 The pieces

Term by term.

In 3xy, 3y is fixed and waits in front.

x gives 1.

So 3y.

So ∂z/∂x = 3y.

∂z∂x = 3y

Term by term.

In 3xy, 3x is fixed and waits in front.

y gives 1.

So 3x.

So ∂z/∂y = 3x.

∂z∂y = 3x

x = t², so dx/dt = 2t.

dxdt = 2t

y = t, so dy/dt = 1.

dydt = 1

3 Use the chain rule

The chain rule: the x path plus the y path.

dzdt = ∂z∂x × dxdt + ∂z∂y × dydt

Put the four pieces in.

dzdt = (3y) × (2t) + (3x) × (1)

Careful!

Many people use only one path.

z changes through x and through y, so both paths count.

Careful: two paths: add them

4 Write it in t

The answer should be in t only.

So put x = t² and y = t in.

x = t², y = t

Each x becomes t² and each y becomes t.

dzdt = 3(t) × (2t) + 3(t2) × (1)

Multiply each part out: numbers with numbers, and add the powers of t.

dzdt = 6t2 + 3t2

Add the like terms: dz/dt = 9t².

dzdt = 9t2

5 Check

Let's check another way.

Put x and y in first: z = 3t³.

z = 3t³

Its derivative is 9t².

The same answer.

Right!

dzdt = 9t²

Let's look back.

First: draw the tree.

Then: the pieces.

Then: use the chain rule.

Then: write it in t.

Last: check.

Answer
dzdt = 9t2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find z = xy, x = 3t², y = t
Show the answer
dzdt = 9t²
