z = x + y^2, x = t^3, y = 2t, find dz/dt

Step by step

The question

Question: find dz/dt when z = x + y², x = t³ and y = 2t.

z = x + y2, x = t³, y = 2t

1 Draw the tree

Draw a tree.

z depends on x and y.

Each of them depends on t.

Each branch has its own slope.

To go from z down to t, there are two paths.

Multiply along each path, then add the paths.

2 The pieces

Term by term.

x gives 1.

y² has no x: it is a fixed number, so it gives 0.

∂z∂x = 1 + 0

Drop the zeros: ∂z/∂x = 1.

∂z∂x = 1

Term by term.

x has no y: it is a fixed number, so it gives 0.

y²: the power 2 comes down.

The power goes down by 1.

So 2y.

∂z∂y = 0 + 2y

Drop the zeros: ∂z/∂y = 2y.

∂z∂y = 2y

x = t³, so dx/dt = 3t².

dxdt = 3t2

y = 2t, so dy/dt = 2.

dydt = 2

3 Use the chain rule

The chain rule: the x path plus the y path.

dzdt = ∂z∂x × dxdt + ∂z∂y × dydt

Put the four pieces in.

dzdt = (1) × (3t2) + (2y) × (2)

Careful!

Many people use only one path.

z changes through x and through y, so both paths count.

Careful: two paths: add them

4 Write it in t

The answer should be in t only.

So put x = t³ and y = 2t in.

x = t³, y = 2t

Each x becomes t³ and each y becomes 2t.

dzdt = × (3t2) + 2(2t) × (2)

Multiply each part out: numbers with numbers, and add the powers of t.

So dz/dt = 3t² + 8t.

dzdt = 3t2 + 8t

5 Check

Let's check another way.

Put x and y in first: z = t³ + 4t².

z = t³ + 4t²

Its derivative is 3t² + 8t.

The same answer.

Right!

dzdt = 3t² + 8t

Let's look back.

First: draw the tree.

Then: the pieces.

Then: use the chain rule.

Then: write it in t.

Last: check.

Answer
dzdt = 3t2 + 8t

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find z = x + 4y2, x = 2t³, y = t
Show the answer
dzdt = 6t² + 8t
