The question

Question: find the volume of a cube with sides 4 cm.

1 Side × side × side

Volume is how much space is inside.

We count the 1 by 1 by 1 cubes that fit.

All the sides of a cube are the same.

So the volume is V = side × side × side.

V = side × side × side

Now put the numbers in: side = 4.

V = 4 × 4 × 4

4 times 4 is 16.

That is one layer of 16 cubes.

So V = 16 × 4: 4 layers of 16.

V = 16 × 4

16 times 4 is 64.

We count cubes, so the unit is cm³.

So the volume is 64 cm³.

V = 64 cm3
Answer
V = 64 cm3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:
