Step by step

The question

Question: find the area of a rectangle 9 cm long and 6 cm wide.

1 What area means

Area is how much space is inside.

We count the 1 by 1 squares that fit.

One row has 9 squares.

There are 6 rows.

2 Length times width

So the area is length times width: A = length × width.

Squares in a row, times the rows.

A = length × width

Now put the numbers in: length = 9 and width = 6.

A = 9 × 6

9 times 6 is 54.

We count squares, so the unit is cm².

So the area is 54 cm².

A = 54 cm2

3 Check

Let's check: count row by row.

6 rows of 9 squares.

9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 54

We get 54 again.

So the area is right!

Let's look back.

First: what area means.

Then: length times width.

Last: check.

Answer
A = 54 cm2
