AD bisects angle A, AB = 8, AC = 12, BD = 6, find DC

Step by step, with the reason for every step · A line parallel to a side · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: A D cuts angle A in half, with AB = 8, AC = 12, BD = 6: find DC.

1 Use the bisector rule

A D cuts the angle at A into two equal angles.

It is the angle bisector.

It cuts B C in the same ratio as the two sides next to A: B D to D C is like A B to A C.

2 Write the proportion

So: AB over AC equals BD over DC.

ABAC = BDDC

Careful!

Keep the same order on both sides: the matching parts on top, the matching parts at the bottom.

Careful: not ABAC = DCBD ✗

Put the numbers in.

We call DC x: 8/12 = 6 over x.

812 = 6x

3 Cross multiply

When two fractions are equal, we can cross multiply.

These two are equal.

8 × x = 6 × 12

Work out the multiplications.

8x = 72

4 Remove the 8

8x means 8 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 8, we divide by 8.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

8x8 = 728

8 divided by 8 is 1.

So just x is left.

72 divided by 8 is 9.

728 = 9

So x = 9!

x = 9

5 Check

Let's check: put 9 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 812 = 8÷412÷4 = 23

Now the right side.

Right: 69 = 6÷39÷3 = 23

Both sides are 2/3.

So x = 9 is right!

Both sides equal 23

So DC = 9.

Let's look back.

First: use the bisector rule.

Then: write the proportion.

Then: cross multiply.

Then: remove the 8.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 9
