Find lim x->3 (√(3x + 7) - 4)/(x - 3)

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Limits by the conjugate · Calculus

Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → 3 of (√(3x + 7) − 4)/(x − 3).

lim x → 3 √3x + 7 − 4x − 3 =

1 Put the number in

Put 3 in place of x.

The top is 0, and the bottom is 0.

√3(3) + 7 − 43 − 3 = 00

The square root of 16 is 4.

4 minus 4 is 0.

√16 = 4, so 4 − 4 = 0

0/0 has no value.

It tells us to work more.

00: no value yet. Work more!

2 Multiply by the conjugate

The conjugate of √(3x + 7) − 4 is √(3x + 7) + 4: the same two terms, with the sign swapped.

conjugate of √3x + 7 − 4 is √3x + 7 + 4

Multiply the top and the bottom by the conjugate.

lim x → 3 √3x + 7 − 4x − 3 = lim x → 3 √3x + 7 − 4x − 3 × √3x + 7 + 4√3x + 7 + 4

Something over itself is 1.

So the value does not change.

√3x + 7 + 4√3x + 7 + 4 = 1

Careful!

Both the top and the bottom!

One alone would change the value.

Careful: not only the top × (√(3x + 7) + 4) ✗

3 Multiply out

Remember: a minus b, times a plus b, is a squared minus b squared.

The middle terms cancel.

(a − b)(a + b) = a2 − b2

On top: (√(3x + 7) − 4) times (√(3x + 7) + 4).

That is the root squared, minus 4 squared.

The bottom we leave as it is.

= lim x → 3 (√3x + 7)2 − 42(x − 3)(√3x + 7 + 4)

A square root squared is just what is inside.

So it is 3x − 9.

(√3x + 7)2 − 42 = 3x − 9

Take out the 3: 3x − 9 is 3 times (x − 3).

3x − 9 = 3(x − 3)

Now (x − 3) is on the top and on the bottom.

= lim x → 3 3(x − 3)(x − 3)(√3x + 7 + 4)

4 Cancel

x gets close to 3, but it is never 3.

So x − 3 is not 0.

x ≠ 3, so x − 3 ≠ 0

Something over itself is 1.

So we cross out (x − 3) on the top and the bottom.

Write what is left: 3 over (√(3x + 7) + 4).

= lim x → 3 3√3x + 7 + 4

5 Put the number in again

Now the 0 is gone.

Put 3 in again.

= 3√3(3) + 7 + 4

The square root of 16 is 4.

= 34 + 4

So the limit is 3/8.

= 38

6 Check

Let's check with numbers close to 3.

A calculator gives 0.3752 at x = 2.99.

x = 2.99: f(x) ≈ 0.3752

And 0.3748 at x = 3.01.

Both are close to 3/8, which is 0.375.

Right!

x = 3.01: f(x) ≈ 0.3748

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: multiply by the conjugate.

Then: multiply out.

Then: cancel.

Then: put the number in again.

Last: check.

Answer
= 38

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

lim x → 0 √3x + 9 − 3x
Show the answer
limit = 12
