Find lim x->6 (x - 6)/(2 - √(x - 2))

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Limits by the conjugate · Calculus

Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → 6 of (x − 6)/(2 − √(x − 2)).

lim x → 6 x − 62 − √x − 2 =

1 Put the number in

Put 6 in place of x.

The top is 0, and the bottom is 0.

6 − 62 − √6 − 2 = 00

The square root of 4 is 2.

2 minus 2 is 0.

√4 = 2, so 2 − 2 = 0

0/0 has no value.

It tells us to work more.

00: no value yet. Work more!

2 Multiply by the conjugate

The conjugate of 2 − √(x − 2) is 2 + √(x − 2): the same two terms, with the sign swapped.

conjugate of 2 − √x − 2 is 2 + √x − 2

Multiply the top and the bottom by the conjugate.

lim x → 6 x − 62 − √x − 2 = lim x → 6 x − 62 − √x − 2 × 2 + √x − 22 + √x − 2

Something over itself is 1.

So the value does not change.

2 + √x − 22 + √x − 2 = 1

Careful!

Both the top and the bottom!

One alone would change the value.

Careful: not only the bottom × (2 + √(x − 2)) ✗

3 Multiply out

Remember: a minus b, times a plus b, is a squared minus b squared.

The middle terms cancel.

(a − b)(a + b) = a2 − b2

At the bottom: (2 − √(x − 2)) times (2 + √(x − 2)).

That is the root squared, minus 2 squared.

The top we leave as it is.

= lim x → 6 (x − 6)(2 + √x − 2)22 − (√x − 2)2

A square root squared is just what is inside.

So it is 6 − x.

22 − (√x − 2)2 = 6 − x

6 − x is the same as minus (x − 6).

6 − x = −(x − 6)

Now (x − 6) is on the top and on the bottom.

= lim x → 6 (x − 6)(2 + √x − 2)−(x − 6)

4 Cancel

x gets close to 6, but it is never 6.

So x − 6 is not 0.

x ≠ 6, so x − 6 ≠ 0

Something over itself is 1.

So we cross out (x − 6) on the top and the bottom.

Write what is left: −2 + √(x − 2).

= lim x → 6 −2 + √x − 2

5 Put the number in again

Now the 0 is gone.

Put 6 in again.

= −2 + √6 − 2

The square root of 4 is 2.

= −2 + 2

So the limit is −4.

= −4

6 Check

Let's check with numbers close to 6.

A calculator gives −3.9975 at x = 5.99.

x = 5.99: f(x) ≈ −3.9975

And −4.0025 at x = 6.01.

Both are close to −4.

Right!

x = 6.01: f(x) ≈ −4.0025

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: multiply by the conjugate.

Then: multiply out.

Then: cancel.

Then: put the number in again.

Last: check.

Answer
= −4

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

lim x → 2 x − 24 − √x + 14
Show the answer
limit = −8
