Step by step

The question

Question: find the mean of the grouped data with classes 10 to 20, 20 to 30 and 30 to 40, and frequencies 5, 8 and 7.

Mean of the grouped data

Each class is a range of numbers.

f is how many numbers are in it.

So 5 numbers are from 10 to 20.

f = how many, m = the middle of the class

1 Find the midpoints

We don't know the numbers themselves.

So each class uses its middle, m: the midpoint.

m = (10 + 20) ÷ 2 = 15

The middle of 10 and 20: add them, divide by 2.

15.

Next: 25.

Each midpoint is 10 more.

And so on.

2 Multiply m × f

Each number in a class counts as its midpoint.

So a class adds up to m times f.

15 times 5 is 75.

25 times 8 is 200.

The same for every row.

3 Add the columns

The f column: 20 numbers in all.

5 + 8 + 7 = 20

The m × f column: 520.

That is about the total of all the numbers.

75 + 200 + 245 = 520

4 Share equally

The mean shares the total equally: 520 divided by 20.

mean ≈ 52020

It is only an estimate: the midpoints stand in for the real numbers.

≈ : an estimate, from the midpoints

Careful!

Not divided by the 3 classes.

There are 20 numbers.

Careful: not 5203 ✗

520 divided by 20 is 26.

mean ≈ 26

5 Check

Let's check: 26 times 20 is 520, the total.

26 × 20 = 520

And the mean is between the first and the last midpoints.

So it makes sense!

15 < 26 < 35

Let's look back.

First: find the midpoints.

Then: multiply m × f.

Then: add the columns.

Then: share equally.

Last: check.

Answer
mean ≈ 26

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Mean of 0–10: 7, 10–20: 10, 20–30: 7
Show the answer
mean ≈ 15
