Step by step

The question

Question: find the mean of the grouped data with classes 50 to 60, 60 to 70, 70 to 80 and 80 to 90, and frequencies 2, 6, 9 and 3.

Mean of the grouped data

Each class is a range of numbers.

f is how many numbers are in it.

So 2 numbers are from 50 to 60.

f = how many, m = the middle of the class

1 Find the midpoints

We don't know the numbers themselves.

So each class uses its middle, m: the midpoint.

m = (50 + 60) ÷ 2 = 55

The middle of 50 and 60: add them, divide by 2.

55.

Next: 65.

Each midpoint is 10 more.

And so on.

2 Multiply m × f

Each number in a class counts as its midpoint.

So a class adds up to m times f.

55 times 2 is 110.

65 times 6 is 390.

The same for every row.

3 Add the columns

The f column: 20 numbers in all.

2 + 6 + 9 + 3 = 20

The m × f column: 1430.

That is about the total of all the numbers.

110 + 390 + 675 + 255 = 1430

4 Share equally

The mean shares the total equally: 1430 divided by 20.

mean ≈ 143020

It is only an estimate: the midpoints stand in for the real numbers.

≈ : an estimate, from the midpoints

Careful!

Not divided by the 4 classes.

There are 20 numbers.

Careful: not 14304 ✗

1430 divided by 20 is 71.5.

mean ≈ 71.5

5 Check

Let's check: 71.5 times 20 is 1430, the total.

71.5 × 20 = 1430

And the mean is between the first and the last midpoints.

So it makes sense!

55 < 71.5 < 85

Let's look back.

First: find the midpoints.

Then: multiply m × f.

Then: add the columns.

Then: share equally.

Last: check.

Answer
mean ≈ 71.5

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Mean of 50–60: 5, 60–70: 4, 70–80: 11, 80–90: 5
Show the answer
mean ≈ 71.4
