Step by step

The question

Question: find the perimeter of a parallelogram with sides 10 and 7.

1 Find every side

The perimeter is the way all around the edge.

We add every side.

A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.

It looks like a rectangle pushed over.

Its opposite sides are the same length.

So the top is the same as the bottom: 10.

The right side is the same as the left: 7.

2 Add all the sides

Walk around and add: 10 + 7 + 10 + 7.

P = 10 + 7 + 10 + 7

10 plus 7 is 17.

The other two sides make 17 too.

P = 17 + 17

17 plus 17 is 34.

So the perimeter is 34.

P = 34

3 Check

Let's check another way: one long side and one short side, then double it.

2 × (10 + 7) = 2 × 17 = 34

We get 34 again.

So the perimeter is right!

Let's look back.

First: find every side.

Then: add all the sides.

Last: check.

Answer
P = 34
