Step by step

The question

Question: find the perimeter of a parallelogram with sides 9 cm and 4 cm.

1 Find every side

The perimeter is the way all around the edge.

We add every side.

A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.

It looks like a rectangle pushed over.

Its opposite sides are the same length.

So the top is the same as the bottom: 9 cm.

The right side is the same as the left: 4 cm.

2 Add all the sides

Walk around and add: 9 + 4 + 9 + 4.

P = 9 + 4 + 9 + 4

9 plus 4 is 13.

The other two sides make 13 too.

P = 13 + 13

13 plus 13 is 26.

So the perimeter is 26 cm.

P = 26 cm

3 Check

Let's check another way: one long side and one short side, then double it.

2 × (9 + 4) = 2 × 13 = 26

We get 26 again.

So the perimeter is right!

Let's look back.

First: find every side.

Then: add all the sides.

Last: check.

Answer
P = 26 cm
