Step by step

The question

Question: find the population standard deviation of 20, 25, 30 and 25.

Population SD of 20, 25, 30, 25

The standard deviation, SD, tells how far the numbers usually are from the mean.

SD = how far the numbers usually are from the mean

1 Find the mean

First the mean: add them all, then divide by how many.

The total is 100.

100 divided by 4 is 25.

mean = 20 + 25 + 30 + 254 = 1004 = 25

2 Distances from the mean

A table: how far each number is from the mean.

20 minus 25 is −5.

Negative: 20 is below the mean.

25 minus 25 is 0.

30 minus 25 is 5.

Above the mean.

Look: the distances add up to 0.

The ones below the mean cancel the ones above.

−5 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 0

Careful!

Adding the distances always gives 0.

So we square them first.

Squares are never negative.

Careful: the distances always add to 0: square them first

3 Square them

A new column: each distance squared.

−5 squared is −5 times −5.

Negative times negative is positive: 25.

And the rest.

4 Add the squares

We add the squares: 25 plus 0 plus 25 plus 0 is 50.

25 + 0 + 25 + 0 = 50

5 Divide

These numbers are the whole group, a population.

So we divide by how many there are.

population: ÷ n

50 divided by 4 is 12.5.

This is the variance.

variance = 504 = 12.5

6 Square root

The variance is in squared units.

The square root brings it back.

The square root of 12.5 is 3.5355 and more digits.

SD = √12.5 = 3.5355…

The books round to one more decimal place than the data.

So the SD is about 3.5.

SD ≈ 3.5
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data

So the numbers are usually about 3.5 away from the mean, 25.

the numbers are about 3.5 from the mean 25

7 Check

Let's check: 3.5 squared is 12.25.

That is about the variance, 12.5.

So it is right!

3.52 = 12.25 ≈ 12.5

Let's look back.

First: find the mean.

Then: distances from the mean.

Then: square them.

Then: add the squares.

Then: divide.

Then: square root.

Last: check.

Answer
1 decimal place: 1 more than the data
